Well I was supposed to go on a island cycling tour this weekend but the weather turned on us and we decided to cancel. I'm not worried, I'll go on this trip eventually. Turned out to be a good thing since I woke up Saturday with swollen glands and an earache, all on top of a regular hangover.
Friday night was a fantastic meal of jimdak which consisted of chicken, noodles, potatoes, tteok and carrots all in a sweet and spicy sauce. Delicious. Then we proceeded to pub hop around Bupyeong. Our last stop was a place called N's Pub. I've been a few times before but it's usually packed and no tables so we don't stay long. Tonight we got a booth table and decided to stay. It is from this point where we saw a bar brawl... full out bar brawl. The only people not involved in this fight were me, my friends and the bartender. There were crazy asians on both sides, some white guys trying to break it up, chairs being thrown, bottles being hurled... and even a ninja kick. The shit was intense. We almost ended up underneath it when a bunch came crashing in to the half wall of our booth, thankfully that half wall saved us. We ended up having to stay an hour later than we wanted because eventually the fight moved outside.
Sunday Jeff and I headed to Insadong and had a great time. For those of you who never read my earlier post, Insadong is a touristy area with lots of shopping and street vendors. It gets insanely busy with both foreigners and Koreans.
At the end of the day we were about to leave and I saw a little man sitting there and realized that he wrote your name on paper... I was humming and hawing on whether I wanted to get it done when he started talking to me. He called me beautiful and I was hooked. He made me write my name for him and then come stand behind him so that my "energy" would be transfered. He then explained that the paper was hand made Korean paper and that the pictures will come from his core, up through his arm and out on to the paper. He was a pretty funny fellow that spoke okay English and kept asking if I understood... which most of the time I did. He began and almost immediately a crowd of Koreans started to gather. Soon I was surrounded by tons and tons of people who were watching him work and staring at me.. and then taking pictures of us. It was really awkward.. children were pushing to the front of the line and staring at me and even some white people stopped to take a look. Near the end I got the courage up to take a video... but that time most of the crowd had left, but I wanted to get a picture of the guy doing his work and a shot to prove that there really were people all around me.
Apparently the blue bird symbolizes traveling from one country to another. The meaning of the "A"s is less clear. Here is how the conversation went:
Him: "Do you know pick up?"
Me: "uhhh....?"
Him: "pick up... pick up.. you are very beautiful.... therefore... pick up. you get.. pick up... veeery beautiful... you know?"
Me: "....................k.........."
Regardless I love it and it will be up on my wall tomorrow. For now, it's time for bed!
